Walk-in fracture and sports injury clinic

Walk-in fracture and sports injury clinic

Our pediatric orthopaedic surgeons realize there is a need to provide care for kids with fractures and sports injuries in a timely manner. Shriners Hospitals for Children - Portland is one of the few places in Portland where children can be seen by a pediatric orthopaedic specialist on a walk-in basis, five days a week (except holidays).

“Children are not small adults – their bones heal faster than adults. This means that a child with an injury should see an experienced pediatric orthopaedic specialist as soon as possible,” said Michael Aiona, M.D., pediatric orthopaedic surgeon.

Our outpatient team provides high-quality specialty care, and dedicates the day to patients with fractures and sports injuries. Specialty care may include reduction, re-alignment, surgery, casting, post-fracture follow-up and/or rehabilitative services. We also offer waterproof casts, which are durable casts made of a special material that doesn't absorb water. These casts can be a more desirable option for patients and families because it's not necessary to cover the cast to keep it from getting wet and it dries quickly, thus making it an easier cast to maintain.

We know providers often see injuries under urgent circumstances and do not have time to research specialty care options or make phone calls to set up appointments. The injury clinic provides a convenient, reliable solution for busy providers and families. No appointment is necessary and referring physicians and families are welcome to visit.

Fracture and sports injury referral guidelines:

  • We see children and teenagers up to age 17.
  • The clinic accepts patients with both known or suspected fractures. If the patient has an existing X-ray of the fracture or injury, please bring it with you. Otherwise, the patient will receive an X-ray in the clinic.
  • Patients with open fractures, circulatory involvement, nerve issues, or life- or limb-threatening conditions should go to an emergency room.

Children up to age 17 with orthopaedic conditions are eligible for care, regardless of the families’ ability to pay.
