At Shriners Hospitals for Children - Portland, volunteers are an invaluable part of our philosophy for care. Whether it's working behind the scenes or interacting with patients, families and staff, every volunteer position is important and provides a genuine service to our hospital and patients.

Volunteer placement is based on the needs of our hospital, the kind of work you wish to do and the times you are available. We cannot guarantee open positions all the time, but we work hard to align your talents and interests with your volunteer position to ensure a meaningful volunteer experience.

Volunteer requirements

To protect the health and safety of our patients and families, it is imperative for our volunteers to meet certain requirements. All hospital volunteers must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be willing to commit to a regular, weekly volunteer shift for at least six months
  • Submit to a complete background check, including references, criminal records and child abuse history
  • Have up-to-date vaccinations, including MMR, TDAP, Hepatitis B, and varicella
  • Provide proof of a negative tuberculosis test within the past 12 months, or pass a two-step Mantoux test provided by the Portland Shriners Hospital
  • Pass a drug screening test
  • Attend a comprehensive orientation prior to beginning your volunteer position

Some programs have additional requirements.

Pet therapy

Pet therapy volunteers bring smiles to the faces of children here at the hospital through our extensive pet visitation program. All pet therapy volunteer candidates must complete a Pet Partners workshop and evaluation by our pet therapy coordinator. Additionally, pet therapy volunteers must complete all individual hospital volunteer requirements. For more information or to apply, contact our pet therapy coordinator, Susan Gallegos by email or at 503-221-3373.

Internships are available on a limited basis for specific programs if we have a current affiliation agreement with your school. Check with your college or university to see if they are affiliated with Shriners Hospitals for Children - Portland.

Job shadowing

Our job shadowing programs provide experiential learning opportunities for individuals to learn about health career options in specific areas of health care. Participants will have the opportunity to experience the workplace setting, as well as the duties performed by the health care worker they are shadowing; however, they will not be permitted to take part in hands-on patient care. To find out if the department you are interested in has job shadowing opportunities, call the main hospital line at 503-241-5090 to speak directly with that department.

We are sometimes able to accommodate small groups to provide one-time activity sessions for our inpatients or in our hospital clinic. If you are a group looking to volunteer, please contact our volunteer coordinator whose information can be found at the bottom of this page. Please note that we cannot accommodate groups larger than ten and all volunteers must be 18 or over.

How to apply

If you are interested in joining our team, the first step is to submit a volunteer application.
