Support services

Family resource library

Located in the first floor waiting room, the library includes specialized books, journals, audio-visual resources, fliers about upcoming events, and internet resources about you/your child's condition. In addition to resources on medical topics, there are resources about careers, healthy relationships, independent living, recreation, support and transition.

Family lounges and meditation room

There are several lounges and a meditation room available for our patients and their families. These rooms provide areas for families to be together or take some time to themselves. There are also computers, books, games and videos available in the lounges.

Family Advisory Council

The Family Advisory Council (FAC) is a forum where family members, former patients and hospital representatives can mutually communicate opportunities for improvement that can be reached through collaboration. Our FAC members provide input on patient and parent education, policy development, patient safety and much more.

Family rooms

For the parents of children staying in our inpatient unit, Shriners Hospitals for Children - Portland has a few rooms available for a parent/guardian who is unable to stay in their child's room. These limited rooms are available on a case-by-case basis after the child has been admitted as a patient. You can learn more about our family rooms through your care manager or when you make an appointment.

Laundry machines are available for use by families staying in our family rooms.

Outgoing mail can be sent using the mailbox located at the entrance of the hospital. Mail received after a patient is discharged will be forwarded to the home address of the patient.

Notary public

If you require the services of a notary public while at the Portland Shriners Hospital, there are several available in the building.

Play areas

There are several recreation areas located throughout the hospital for you and your family to enjoy. On the third floor, there is a large activity room with games and arts and crafts supplies; a teen lounge with movies and video games; and a small play alcove within the inpatient unit. On the seventh floor patio, there is an accessible play structure. Volunteers and staff from our child life department facilitate regular activities.


Hospital volunteers can sometimes provide rides to and from the airport, bus station and train station, and transportation assistance is available on a case by case basis through your local Shrine Center. Visit the Getting here page for more information.

Vending machines

Wi-Fi and computer access

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hospital to patients and guests. There are also computers available for patients and families in the family lounges on the third floor and in the family resource library in the first floor waiting room.
